Body Supports

The Core of the Burnett is the High frequency welded Polyurethane pouch which is filled with tiny pin head sized polystyrene beads. The pouch is tested to comply with flame retardant test BS5852 ignition source 0,1 & 5 and with BS7176 medium hazard. The pouch has a 2-way valve, which allows the product to be evacuated.

The product undergoes extensive testing over a minimum of 48 hours with the pouch first being inflated to check for air leaks and once this has passed it is filled with the appropriate volume of beads and then is put under vacuum for 24 hours. Passing both these, the product is ready for despatch.

The pouch is covered with a pure 100% super soft lambswool fleece that is machine washable. This is provided for comfort and to aid air circulation for the user.

How The Body Supports Work

The supports work by moulding themselves to the patients’ profile by the action of the tiny beads flowing to the contours of the body. Air is then taken out of the support by means of a pump attached to the valve, which causes the beads to come together to form a firm mould to the body. If the profile is not correct then air can be introduced into the support by releasing the valve. Once the correct profile is achieved then air can be removed again by the pump.

The supplied foot pump can evacuate the supports in less than 15 seconds with little effort, and air can be introduced within 5 seconds so that adjustments can be made quickly to avoid patient discomfort. The advantage of the foot pump is that the support can be manipulated by hand to achieve the correct posture before air evacuation.

The supports such as the 100,101,104 & 108 will maintain a vacuum for up to 72 hours before a very slight softening may be noticed on the extreme edges. The products with no special detail are able to maintain vacuum for up to 3 weeks before needing attention.

What the supports do

The Burnett body support range has been developed over 15 years with the input of healthcare professionals to help with postural control in a number of seating applications. The vacuum technology enables the supports to mould to, and gently support the user in the desired posture. The adjustability of the product allows infinite manipulations until accurate fit and comfort is achieved. The security provided by the supportive nature of the mould reduces user fatigue and saves valuable staff time. The accuracy of the fit means that the supports assist in the relief of pressure sores.
